For years I made white gravy from a package mix, until I realized how easy it was to make it myself. It’s the same as the base for macaroni and cheese. Any liquid “fat” will do, but butter has more flavor than olive oil, and bacon grease is just too unhealthy for my taste. The gravy will require a good bit of salt. Add carefully, because once you add too much there’s no turning back. You could also add other herbs if you choose. Just be sure to make enough.
White Gravy
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 cups milk
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Melt butter and olive oil in a saucepan.
- Whisk in flour and continue to cook and stir until the mixture browns slightly.
- Add milk and continue stirring until thickened.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
