As kids, our family fondue pot was used exclusively to deep fry steak. We never used it for melted cheese, probably because we only ate American processed cheese, and that doesn’t really work in a fondue pot. But now with my kids, we like both steak and cheese fondue, just not at the same time. To make steak fondue into a meal, we serve baked potatoes and salad on the side, then enjoy a longer dinner of slowly cooking our steak cubes. It keeps everyone around the table. I wouldn’t recommend this meal for a family with very young kids. I think our youngest was about 7 or 8 years old the first time we cooked this meal. The oil spatters, so everyone sits back from the fondue pot. There’s no messing around when the fondue pot is filled with hot oil. So the meal is fun, but the mealtime is a bit more serious and orderly than a typical family dinner. It’s wonderful. Oh, and it tastes great too.
