Before Orange Julius was a chain restaurant in every shopping mall, we all made orange Julius at home in the summer. I remember making it in a summer cooking class before I started junior high school. No, I wasn’t in summer school because I failed 6th grade, it was just for fun. But everyone had already been making orange Julius at home for years. We drank them in between riding our bikes with banana seats and running through the sprinklers to cool off. They’re a ‘70s thing.
My mom made a batch up at the lake a few summers ago and the boys went crazy for them. I had forgotten just how good – and easy – they are. We bought up the last of the frozen orange juice concentrate (grocery stores are still selling out during this pandemic), and we’re sipping our cold orange julius from the backyard patio as the sun gets lower and the shade gets cooler. They make me feel like a kid again. Or at least make me remember how to appreciate summer like a kid.
